This new adventure can be done as an add on BEFORE the Tanzania Safari or a stand alone trip!

This unique opportunity to see gorillas in their natural habitat is unforgettable, some even say life changing. Encounters with gorillas as they go about their daily lives are carefully managed, with expert trackers and guides leading small groups of tourists up bamboo-covered slopes to spend precious and awe-inspiring time just a few feet away from the gentle creatures.

DAY 1 - SEPTEMBER 12TH : ARRIVAL – KIGALI INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

Upon your arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be greeted and welcomed by our local guides, who will assist you with your luggage. You will then be transferred to DES MILLES COLLINES HOTEL, one of the city's four-star hotels with an amazing view of the city. You will have a relaxing check in and the afternoon to enjoy the hotel amenities or explore the city with our other guests. Dinner included and an evening meeting will be enjoyed at the hotel.

DAY 2 - SEPT 13TH: KIGALI GENOCIDE MEMORIAL AND TRANSFER TO VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

After your included buffet breakfast, we will embark at 8 am in our safari cars and start the guided tour of Rwanda's capital city. First stop, pay a solemn visit to the Genocide Memorial Site and learn how the country has dealt with its past and recovered to stand today as a testament to humankind’s resilience. The memorial serves as the final resting place for more than 250,000 victims of the genocide. Next, we will travel to Volcanoes National Park along the shores of Lake Kivu, where you will enjoy an amazing view of the "Land of a Thousand Hills." The journey will take approximately 4 hours, driving through the fascinating landscape of Rwanda. Upon arrival, check-in at TILOREZA ECOLODGE, have lunch, and relax. In the evening, we will visit the local reforestation area and enjoy the breathtaking views of the gorilla mountains. An evening return to the hotel followed by a relaxing dinner included and a meeting.

DAY 3 - Sept 14th: GORILLA TREKKING IN VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

After an early breakfast at 6:30 am, we will head to the park headquarters for a short briefing about the mountain park and will be assigned to gorilla tracking groups. After the briefing, at 7 am, trekking starts along the paths in the bamboo forests. This amazing activity can take between 2 to 6 hours as you track the mountain gorillas. The tracking involves walking and hiking through the natural habitat of the gorillas in search of them. Once you find them, keep a distance of 7 meters and spend 1 hour observing and interacting with them, taking pictures, and participating in activities designed to help them get accustomed to human presence so they can trek normally in the future. In order to ensure the long-term viability of the gorillas population, all treks are limited to one hour of observation. This may be one the most memorable hours of your life. You will be able to see young apes playing with one another, mothers nursing and silverbacks overseeing their pod. After completing the trek we will return to the hotel for relaxation. Full board meals included througout the day.

What to wear and carry: rain gear,walkable/waterproof shoes, insect repellent, packed lunch/snacks and bottled mineral water, carry gardening gloves and a camera.

DAY 4 - Sept 15th: GOLDEN MONKEY TREKKING IN VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK

After an early breakfast, we will drive to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters. There we will receive an introduction from park rangers at Volcanoes National Park Gate. We then embark on an exhilarating climb through the mysterious rainforest with colorful birds as we find our way to the rare golden monkey. Their striking golden fur coat, contrasting the green rainforests and their dynamic character as they make vast leaps from tree to tree. Truly gives you an unforgettable experience.

Later in the afternoon we drive into a lovely Rwanda cultural village in the vicinity of Volcanoes National Park known as “iby’iwacu culture village” this place combines Rwanda’s cultural traditions, people and history. You’ll get to see what life was in a true Rwandan setting: the lifestyle, houses, food, traditional dances and the way kingdoms were organized. Not only that you’ll have an opportunity to learn ancient hunting skills, carpentry and try weaving baskets. Following these activities, we’ll be transferred back to our lodge to relax. Full board meals are included throughout the day.

DAY 5 - Sept 16th: RIVER CANOEING AND RETURN TO KIGALI

After an early breakfast we depart at 9am for our canoeing experience via River Mukungwa. Set in the foothills of the Virunga Volcanoes, discover this special way to journey though the countryside in modern canoes! You will soak up impressive views, spot abundant birds, look out for the playful otters and meet friendly communities. Led by an expert guide, this river is mostly very gentle and flat with one short, easy rapid and one section where the water goes quite fast. After completeing our canoe journey, you’ll be transferred to vehicles for the drive back to kigali for overnight stay at the Milles Colline Hotel.  Full board meals included.

DAY 6 - Sept 17th: DEPARTING RWANDA AND ON TO YOUR NEXT DESTINATION

After enjoying a buffet breakfast at the hotel we will depart for the Kigali Airport. For those of us heading on to the 2nd part of our Fellow-Ship African Adventure, we will board our flight to Arusha Tanzania to be greeted by our next guides upon our arrival to start our SERENGETI SAFARI ADVENTURE.
